Tangled
‘Tangled’ is hand-sculpted clay.
The sculptor Deborah Gall creates the heart with her hands from stoneware clay. Once formed, she passes the wet clay to Jessica, whom she mentors. Jessica then intuitively carves the clay to bring out the specific energy surrounding this creation. During this process, an energetic’ name emerges.
We carry that name through the Raku ‘birthing through fire’ process in which the wall sculpture is taken out of a red hot 1800° kiln and placed in a can of combustibles. Immediately the heart ignites, and fire swirls around the form. Smoke leaves its mark in unique, interesting patterns as it calms and cools.
Tangled feels like a heart made of many lives stacked together — shining through intricate layers that hold both her breaks and her healing. She is complicated but not chaotic, a woven story of pain that no longer spills outward. You can see what she’s survived, but she doesn’t exude it; instead she carries a soft, steady glow that comes from not giving up. She is the beauty of being mended, luminous in her complexity, whole in her own way.
